Layers is an instrumental work made entirely of trumpets woven and stacked within and upon each other.
What happens when you limit yourself to the exclusive use of a small set of tools? Can an orchestra be replaced with an intrinsically solo instrument? What does it sound like when the timbre of one player is transformed into polyphony? What kind of story can you tell?
Due to a performance related injury, I spent 5 long years with the belief and understanding that I would never play the trumpet again. It left me silent for what felt like a lifetime. It is important that we never forget our incredible capacity to overcome and heal amidst what can feel like the greatest suffering imaginable. There is hope in moving forward. There is room for reinvention.
